The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Is It the Best Cherokee Yet?

Look! It’s a luxury SUV. No, wait—it’s an off-roader! Huh? Why are there kids in that off-roading, luxury SUV? That’s because the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is what we in the automotive world call an anomalous phenomenon, a marvel, a trailblazer.

That’s the beauty of the 2017 Grand Cherokee—no mold can contain it yet it can fit all molds at any given time. On the one hand, you have an extraordinary luxury vehicle with all the modern tech, features, and beautiful styling one could want. On the other hand, it’s a down-and-dirty SUV that won’t give pesky boulders and muddy roads the time of day. And with seating for up to five, it’s even a family-friendly vehicle that fits well in the garage.

At Fredonia CDJR, we’ve fallen madly in love with the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and all its fabulous variations. Whether you’re up in the snowy foothills of Buffalo or the urban landscapes of North East PA, you’ll love it, too. Here’s why.

An Interior Unlike Any Other

In terms of design and implementation, the cabin of the Jeep Grand Cherokee has no equal rival. Furnished from front to back and top to bottom, it’s an evolved work of art, offering drivers and passengers more than just utility, but also style.

Organic-inspired accents like natural wood trimmings will arouse the inner hippie in you, as will the panoramic sunroof, large windows, and seating for up to four more of your vegan friends. However, to keep you squarely seated in the modern era, the 2017 Grand Cherokee utilizes all the flair you’d expect from an SUV.

A convenient central stack of controls is bookended by a 5-inch or available 8.4-inch LCD touchscreen at the top and a series of audio ports and doodads at the bottom, just ahead of the shifter. In the rear, you’ll find an optional Blu-ray Entertainment System that’s paired with a holy-moly 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. At the helm of the Cherokee’s tech is the Uconnect infotainment system; its clean and simple interface will beg you to swipe through the settings menu. Its usefulness knows no bounds, offering Wi-Fi and other cloud-based services, like audio streaming, voice-to-text commands, and on-the-spot navigation and weather reporting.

Speaking of uber-utility, the Grand Cherokee offers more than just flourishes of helpful screen-based technology. Cozy storage compartments in the front keep your third-gen smartphone secure, while removable bins near the spare tire add even more functional stowage options. Fold the rear seats down, and you benefit from 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space. Nappa leather seats can be matched with heated or ventilated cushioning to keep you toasty or cool, depending on the season. Active noise cancellation keeps the cabin quiet, and the wide interior leaves ample room to recline the seats and stretch. Keyless entry and a power liftgate tip the convenience scales in the Grand Cherokee’s favor, while remote start, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, and a plethora of other features push it over the edge.

In all, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has one of the best interiors you’ll find in an SUV—luxury or otherwise.

Looking Fine & Operating at Peak Performance

Mirroring its traditional roots, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee looks more like its 90s predecessors—and that’s as good a compliment as compliments get.

The iconic Jeep grille is parenthesized by distinct LED lights bookending, giving it a lean, mean, trailblazing appearance. As the newest addition to the lineup, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk comes with unique stylings that set it apart from the rest, such as power-folding side mirrors, 18-inch off-road tires, hood decals, and a rear spoiler lip. Overall, the entire Grand Cherokee lineup evokes memories of a time before tech was all the rage.

Under the hood is another story, with a series of engine options that are far more powerful than decades past. Base Grand Cherokees are fitted with a 295hp 3.6L V6 engine that comes with an engine start/stop system. It’s a highly refined engine that offers hill ascent control and strong responsiveness no matter the road conditions.

An available 5.7L V8 that pumps out 360 horsepower is the engine of choice for your off-the-trail adventures. It’ll scale rocks, logs, and small crevasses with ease thanks to the slick Selec-Terrain management system. Just twist the knob to choose one of the five available modes—Auto, Sand, Mud, Snow, or Rock—and take on the elements.

The 2017 Grand Cherokee is also the only domestic SUV to offer a diesel option: the 240hp 3.0L turbodiesel V6 engine. Towing capacity with this diesel engine maxes out at 7,400 pounds, compared to the 6,200 pounds with the V6.

All engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and paddle-shift controls and can be married to rear-wheel drive or one of three other four-wheel-drive options.

What’s New in 2017?

For 2017, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is now available in a special Trailhawk trim—the other Cherokee trims include Summit, Overland, Limited, Laredo, Altitude, SRT, and select Anniversary Editions—and includes new features like self-parking assist and lane departure warnings.
